Period homes near the priory and the older streets often suit ornate iron railings, with finials, collars and twisted bars. We make them to your chosen height and spacing, set on a dwarf wall or fixed into the ground, and can pick out details in gold for contrast. Finials, rings and twists can be chosen to match existing metalwork on a porch or gate.
For newer homes, simple steel railings with plain bars and ball-topped posts give a clean edge. We shape them to the line of the wall beneath, including curves and corners, so the finished run looks as if it was always part of the building. Steel railings also work well around raised patios and along the top of retaining walls, where a safe edge is needed as well as a tidy one.
Long boundaries beside fields, paddocks or open ground can be marked with plain railings on a brick wall, broken by piers and a matching gate. Designing the railings and gate together keeps the whole run consistent and lets the view stay open. A gate can be hung to open inwards or outwards, and fitted with a latch or a lock, depending on who needs to use it.

These railings line the edge of a block-paved drive in front of a detached house. From a distance the gold tips and collars form a band of colour along the black bars. The brick pier at the end has a stone cap that matches the coping on the wall.
Wall lights are set along this curved brick retaining wall, and the black railings above follow its sweep round to the drive. Each section steps with the change in level, and posts are fixed into the top of the wall so the run stays straight and upright.
A small black gate with a curved top opens onto the front path, and matching railings wrap around the flower bed beside it. The run follows the line of the paving, and a few twisted bars add detail. It gives a new-build front garden a finished edge.
Between two brick piers, these railings run in front of a mature tree and a white rendered wall. Alternate bars carry a twisted basket detail, which gives the run some rhythm. The end bracket fixes neatly into the pier, leaving no gap at the join.
Houses close to Avon Beach and the harbour take more weather than those further inland, which is worth bearing in mind when choosing a finish. Several parts of central Christchurch are conservation areas, where front boundaries can be restricted, so ask BCP Council before committing to a design. Tight access on older streets can also affect how railings are delivered, and we'll plan for that when we survey. Ground that slopes towards the river can also affect how posts are set.
