Christchurch sits a short drive east of our Parkstone base, and we regularly work across the borough and its villages. Two tall black gates hang from either side of a single red brick pier with a chimney-style cap, one leading to the front path and one to the side. The curved top rail and small scroll panel give a traditional feel that sits well against the red brick house behind.
This black metal gate slides across a wide block-paved entrance, so nothing swings into the drive. Plain vertical bars run the full length, finished with a scrolled end post. It suits a property with a large forecourt where cars park close to the gate line.
The upper third of these timber driveway gates is made of open spindles under an arched rail, while the solid lower panels carry diagonal braces. Galvanised hinges and a drop bolt fix them between brick piers on a block-paved drive, giving a classic country look.
Built to fill a brick archway exactly, this single timber gate follows the curve of the arch above. Vertical boards and a ring latch keep it simple, and the stained finish sits comfortably against old brickwork. It is a neat way to secure a side entrance on a period house.
Close to the harbour and the cliffs at Highcliffe, exposed timber and metal weather faster, so regular care matters as much as the initial finish. Parts of the old town lie in conservation areas, and gates beside a road above one metre high normally need permission; check with BCP Council first. If an electric gate is planned, think early about getting power to the pier, as it is easier to lay before paving goes down. Gravel drives also need a solid threshold for gates to close cleanly.
